6/365: Perahu Tambangs, also known as River Taxis, ply the riverbanks of the Sarawak River in stark contrast to towering highrises of Kuching overlooking that same river where these little boats thrive. Despite the availability of bridges, river cruises and whatnot, these humble little sampans serve as an alternative mode of transportation for tourists and villagers alike.
We were heading to Kampung Gersik, a village situated on the North bank of the Sarawak River (partially seen in the photo), right opposite the bustling Central Business District of Kuching. Kampung Gersik boasts this renowned layer cake (yes, again) factory – the ‘Kek Lapis Dayang Salhah’. (They even have a website!) And you’ve guessed it – we were going to grab a few more layer cakes – this time for New Year guests.
The cake factory is definitely accessible by road, but my Sister and I got a little more adventurous. The ride took what felt like 5 minutes before I had to end my trigger-frenzy. The overcast weather meant bad lighting conditions which was a bummer. Nonetheless, lighting was still bright enough for some semi-high-speed glory.
awesome! serenity.
Thank you! It surely makes you forget there’s a bustling city right next to this scene eh?
What a lovely photo that speaks so much
I love the water droplets on the bottom left corner of the photo – wonderful shutter speed you have over there. And I realised that you love sepia-toned photos a lot, heh
I love that part too, Teddy! Haha. We’re such suckers for droplets frozen mid-air. I really didn’t expect such an effect because I was literally snapping non-stop for the duration of the ride – which wasn’t long. I guess all that shutter noise must’ve been driving that lady sitting beside me nuts, haha!
Actually it isn’t really sepia. The original shot lacked emotion so I tweaked the WB a little and cranked up the yellow saturation to further bring out the sampan and that paddle head. Then it looked like a whole new photo.
I hate it when you always shoot photos with water droplets. It’s freaking fascinating!
I feel like throwing my camera into the rubbish bin.
btw, is the colour/tone of the photo original?
Bwahaha! I’m gonna shoot more just for that reason! =P
I wouldn’t recommend you to do that though. No camera is worthy of throwing away! There are limitless possibilities you can achieve with a camera, even though you can’t freeze droplets mid air, hehe.
The colours are edited. I wouldn’t call it sepia though, for sepia is essentially B&W with a brownish hue. I’ve intensified the yellow of the boat and peddlehead and applied a shade of brownish-yellow to the rest of the photo. This photo has more of a ‘vintage’ look. At least that was what I was going for to add emotion to that shot.
oh it’s not sepia.
sorry I missed out the comment above. =D
